TEIN2 Applications
Use of the TEIN2 network for collaborative applications is growing rapidly. TEIN2 is already supporting collaborations in several key fields. More information about activities in these fields is available from the links in the left-hand menu.
- Telemedicine: the TEIN2 link to Vietnam has provided strong support to the partnership between the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and the National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi in the fields of paediatrics and cranio-facial treatment.
- Emerging infections: emerging infections such as SARS and Avian Flu have very high detrimental impact in many of the countries and economies served by TEIN2. TEIN2 can play a significant role by facilitating the transfer of the data collected within the affected area to expert sources elsewhere in the region, and allow experts to examine, consult and advise remotely.
- Teleteaching, e-learning and collaboration tools: teleteaching provides an enabling environment for the delivery of education and training in a wide variety of disciplines. These allow collaborators at remote locations around the region to interact in real time as though they were in the same place. A digital video transfer system (DVTS) supported by TEIN2, for example, is permitting high-quality streaming of live surgery from operating theatres to remote classroom settings. A two-way audio feed alongside the video link allows immediate interaction between trainees and surgeons.
- Digital heritage: preservation of cultural heritage by digital means is an effective way of helping retain and curate important elements of culture before they disappear forever.
- Disaster warning, oceanographic research and climate modelling: the TEIN2 infrastructure plays a key role in helping provide timely weather prediction data to TEIN2 partners, particularly the beneficiary countries, Scientists at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology are now able to collaborate with other geographically dispersed teams of researchers, sharing data-intensive models, and interactively examining them.
- Performance measurement and monitoring: measuring and monitoring performance is key to the exploitation of TEIN2 for collaborative research, teleteaching and enhancing societal benefit.
